Desexing your pet
Desexing your pet is a procedure that prevents them from reproducing.
We recommend that dogs be desexed at 6 months of age while cats may be desexed from 4 months.
Desexing is recommended for a number of reasons:
- preventing unwanted litters thus decreasing the stray animal population
- prevention of testicular cancer and prostate disease in males
- prevention of mammal tumours and uterine infections in females
- reducing aggression, especially in male animals
- reducing the roaming behaviour of cats which in turn reduces their risk of cat fight abscess and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)

Complete care
Our desexing fees include the procedure itself, a night in hospital after the surgery to allow complete rest, pain relief after the procedure and a post-operative check 10 days post surgery.
Fasting before surgery
Animals need to be fasted the night before the surgery – all food needs to be removed by 7pm and water should be removed by 7am the morning of admission.
Pre-sedation checks
A vet will perform a physical exam of your pet on admission and administer sedation. Pre-anaesthetic blood testing may be performed prior to surgery if requested (at an additional cost).
Washing your dog
We suggest washing your dog the day before the procedure as they will not be able to be bathed until their post-operative check.

After surgery care
After surgery you need to ensure that your pet is kept calm and quiet. Surgical wounds should be checked morning and night to ensure there are no signs of infection or wound breakdown such as redness, swelling, bleeding or discharge. You need to have your pet checked by a vet if you notice any of these signs.
