Oral Hygiene and care for your pet
Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for ensuring your pet’s health.
Periodontal disease can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, reduced appetite and weight loss, reducing grooming behaviours and halitosis. Regular brushing of your pet’s teeth, the use of dental gels and mouthwashes and dental chew treats can help to keep your pet’s mouth as clean as possible.
Scale and polish
In some cases we will recommend a “scale and polish” – this is the equivalent of us visiting our dental hygienist. A scale and polish (or dental prophylaxis) involves the removal (under general anaesthesia) of dental scale and tartar using an ultrasonic scaler which is followed by polishing with pet friendly toothpaste.
At times animals will develop severe dental disease or experience mouth injuries which will necessitate the extraction of affected teeth. We have a full range of tools which allow us to surgically remove damaged teeth.
